With the festive season almost upon us, I felt Local Food Feast was a worthwhile choice as our Blog of the Day.

Local Food Feast is using their blog to invite people from all over Australia to feast on foods grown in their bio region for 7 days during the festive season (December 24 to January 1). Then participants will share their experiences, recipes and ideas via the blog.

Eating locally looks like a wonderful way to support local farmers while reducing reduce your impact on the environment and the Local Food Feast blog will go a great job connecting people taking part in this challenge. Well done!

I’ve decided to again start the Blog of the Day series of posts. I really like giving some extra promotion to individual bloggers who are doing an excellent job.

First on the list, Diary of a Koalawrangler.

Written by a volunteer who helps care for injured koalas at the Koala Hospital in Port Macquarie. This blog is such a great example of how user generated media can give a ongoing personal account of what happens behind the scenes in a type of organisation that rarely gets much media coverage.

There are lots of great posts to go through at Diary of a Koalawrangler but you should definitely check out the one which has photos of a rare white koala!

With the first day back into our routine of giving out a virtual pat on the back to great bloggers being a Friday, I get to feature another Australian music blog. Yay!

I’m very happy to say that a blog about the best album cover designs, Sleevage, is the latest to be acknowledged as our Blog of the Day.

Sleevage is produced by the team at Soap Creative who won a Webby Award earlier this year for their BannerBlog project.

This blog is a great regular read if you are keen to browse or search some of the world’s most interesting music album covers. You’ll also find out some of the stories about the making of the thing that probably helped form the first thought to judge and discover your favourite band or album.

Another Friday, another Australian Music Blog as our Blog of the Day.

A Reminder is a great music blog that has been around since November 2005. Daily posts about local music news, links to mp3 downloads, a blogroll collection to keep you busy for a month and a list of upcoming gigs in the capital cities make A Reminder a excellent choice to add to your feed reader. The Flickr stream of gig and festival photos is also must look.

I think Fridays are a great day to post about music blogs. A few weeks ago we featured music photographer extraordinaire Boudist and today we acknowledge a Australian Music group blog by Dom, Jerry, Natasha and Simone called Who The Bloody Hell Are They? as our Blog of the Day.

If you love finding new music and if you haven’t been listening to Triple J or your local community station like Sydney’s FBi or Melbourne’s Triple R for a healthy dose of new Australian and independent music then you will definitely be introduced to some great new songs and bands at Who The Bloody Hell Are They?

In all posts there is a embedded mp3 player or music video to sample the music and with a blogroll that is packed with more music links you could easily spend your entire weekend finding some great tunes. Enjoy!

Mondays can be the toughest day to get motivated for. Whether this is because it is the furthest point from the next weekend or your thoughts are drifting back to the weekend just passed or forward to the long list of things to do during the work week. Mondays can be difficult.

So this morning I went about selecting The Happy Blog as our Blog of the Day because it has some great motivational tips and life lessons written by knowledgeable and experienced professionals which will definitely help anyone get through feelings of Mondayitis.

The Happy Blog is published by a team of clinical and coaching psychologists. While generally I’m a bit too cynical to be a fan of self help gurus or books I’ve found this blog which has a nice mix of 400+ short and long posts to be a wonderful resource of advice.

Blogging is a perfect tool for local grassroots activism. Having a blog allows anyone to build an audience to spread their message in an easy, low cost and effective manner.

Australia’s drought crisis is affecting all sorts of small things that can significantly impact the lifestyles of all of us as inhabitants of the big brown land. One affected group doing something about it is the regional football campaign SaveFooty which has been selected as our Blog of the Day.

SaveFooty is a blog created to raises funds for every local sports ground under threat of closure due to drought so that they can buy a water tank.

It’s a great idea that I hope through the help of blogging succeeds. As a blogger you can support it by linking to their web site and if you are a member of an AFL club, send the link to your club’s CEO so they know about the cause.

The thing that excites me, mainly because I always wanted to be a mascot, is that the SaveFooty blog has their own mascot named ‘Toothy’. How terrific is that? I can’t figure out what the link between the lack of rain, football and teeth is, but it honestly doesn’t matter to me. ‘Toothy’ needs to be planted right behind the set of Channel 7’s Sunrise to get some attention from Mel and Kochie and national TV coverage to add a little oomph to the awareness of their blog. I’ve never understood why the mainstream media does not report suicides in a more open manner. I’m not saying we need to hear personal details of such tragedies every night on the television news but there could be significantly more done to raise awareness of the high rates of suicide in Australia.

I know the theory is that the media don’t want to encourage more instances, I just don’t think that argument holds any weight. Especially when organisations like Beyond Blue or Reach Out! always advocate that individuals openly discuss thoughts of taking one’s life. Yet when a unfortunate situation does occur, the mainstream media embargo the incident as the big pink elephant in the room that no one is willing to talk about.

I’ve had two people from my circle of friends commit suicide and in one other occurrence, closely observed the media’s uncertainty when reporting suicide. Last year, the school captain at my former high school in the regional city of Toowoomba took his own life. Brisbane Channel 9 television news was the only media outlet to report it. The Courier Mail newspaper, Channel 7, Network 10 as well as the local WIN TV and Toowomba Chronicle newspaper all chose not to run the story. This left me unable to understand what was the correct way for the media to deal with such an event.

Which is why when I recently found Crumbling Walls via a blogroll I immediately marked it as a Blog of the Day.

Crumbling Walls is a blog that has been written for the last 12 months by a mother as she grieves over the loss of her 18 year old son to suicide.

I think this is an incredible example that shows the power of personal publishing in giving voice to a story that would have most likely been lost and not heard by the wider community. It’s an emotional and powerful blog to read but gives an extraordinary insight into what families go through when they are confronted with a suicide by one of their loved ones. There is not much more I can say about it other than that I can highly Crumbling Walls as our Blog of the Day.

Compared to most other web sites, blogs have the freedom to stretch the boundaries of design. But only talented web designers have the skills to produce something spectacular. Unfortunately, the rest of us bloggers have to be satisfied with modifying templates. Sometimes even those with super skills to make their blog look deadly are using said skills to pay the bills.

However, a blog I added to the Australian blog search index this morning is by far the sexiest looking Australian blog I’ve seen recently. Which is why Drive:Activated (found via the comments at Meg’s Dipping into the Blogpond) has been selected as today’s Blog of the Day.

This personal blog of a 20 year old Melbourne student is a great example of how to make an impact with your blog’s design in a simple way. The fact that he is a very active blogger with some good ideas makes Drive:Activated a “must read” blog. Congrats on an excellent effort Samuel!

It’s late on Friday afternoon and thoughts of the weekend are front of mind.

Hopefully mine will be filled with good music and good friends.

A blog that screams nothing but music and mates is Boudist - the personal blog of photographer and designer Daniel Boud.

With coverage of music festivals in Australia or overseas his shots of bands and crowds can only get you excited about seeing more live music. While the regular Sydney party photos make you wish you were a beautiful young thing. Words will never do this blog justice so go spend half an hour enjoying his brilliant images.

Something extra making Boudist a must visit blog destination is that Daniel has written a two part Concert Photography Masterclass (1 + 2) for budding photographers that is so detailed it might put him out of a job. Kudos.
