Anzac Day - No BotD
25 April 2007
I couldn’t find one blog that would to do justice to being featured on Anzac Day so we’ll skip posting in our Blog of the Day series today.
Though, I will do a wrap of Anzac Day posts from the blogosphere tomorrow as there seems to be a high number of blogs and photos already going online from the dawn services.
For those at home keen to get into the spirit and want something tasty to eat, Aussie blogger Benjamin Christie has an Anzac Biscuits recipe with a background on the origin of what were apparently originally known as Soldier’s Biscuits.

Cheeseburger Gothic - Blog of the Day
24 April 2007
The fact that I can read what everyday nobodies like me have to say about whatever they want is one of the main attractions I have to everything blogging.
I am however also attracted to seeing what happens when a professional writer braves the big wild world that is the blogopshere. Unfortunately, it still seems that in Australia many are unwilling to take the plunge (please prove me wrong if you know of any great blogs).
One who isn’t is John Birmingham. The author of He Died With A Felafel In His Hand, the cult book about his sharehouse experiences in Brisbane.
Birmingham has recently moved back to Brisneyland and in the process taken up a paid blogging gig with Fairfax’s new online newspaper the Brisbane Times.
While that blog is a great read, it’s his personal blog Cheeseburger Gothic that has taken my fancy. So much so that it has been selected as the second Australian Blog of the Day.
With an about us page like this, I think the choice makes a lot of sense….
I write for food and shelter, Have been for a while now. My first year as a writer I made $139. But I had fun. Now I make more money, but have less fun doing so. That’s why I’m here. This place is fun.
It is easy for bloggers to take shots at the established mainstream journos and media for not “getting” new media formats like blogs on the back of ignorant commentary about blogging or their own poor attempts to jump on the bandwagon. But I really think “Birmo” has a excellent blog in Cheeseburger Gothic.
Understandably, this personal blog is much more uncensored than his Fairfax blog and has a very active community of commenters that he regularly refers to in posts. For me at least, it’s great seeing a magazine journo and book author so wholeheartedly embrace blogging. Well done John!

Milk and Cookies - Blog of the Day
23 April 2007
It was a tough task picking our first ever Australian Blog of the Day especially when we had 1197 1216 to choose from.
I didn’t want to start with a political, personal, geeky, celebrity or commercial blog or with a blogger I was mates with or related to. Suddenly I realised how the blogosphere can at times seem like a very small world. But I still wanted to showcase an established blog that would appeal to everyone.
Which is why I couldn’t go past choosing from one of the many Australian food bloggers. This corner of the Internet community is by far the most organised part of the local blogosphere with Oz specific blog rolls that go forever and a commitment to high quality regular frequency blogging that is second to none.
It won’t be the last food blog in this ongoing series but today’s Australian Blog of the Day is Milk and Cookies.

An excellent blog that has a mix of recipes with detailed walkthroughs of the entire preparation/cooking process and dining out experiences from Sydney which is all complemented by incredible photos to do the food and words real justice. The twenty plus comments in most posts show what a great following Milk and Cookies has amongst its readers. I especially like the donut featured from a Balmain cafe.
Congrats for being our first BotD!

Hand Picked Daily Blog Goodness
23 April 2007
Welcome to The Local’s Blog of the Day!
Every day we will search through the blogs that have been included in the blogs.com.au search index and pick one out for special mention by being naming it our Blog of the Day.
We hope this will be a good place for readers to find both brand new as well as established blogs and that featured bloggers get showcased to a new audience.
Happy Blog Hunting!
